The Celtic Englishes IV - September 2004

Contributors and Respondents

The fourth Colloquium on the "Celtic Englishes" at the University of Potsdam (Germany) took place from 22 to 26 September 2004. Its title was "Exploring the 'Celticity' of the Celtic Englishes".

A three year span was left between the Colloquia for old ideas to germinate and for new ideas to develop. As the years 1997, 2000 and 2003 saw the publication of the proceedings of the first three colloquia, the final colloquium of this series took place in September this year, where we discussed recent insights into this fascinating study field and explored the common bond between the various Celtic Englishes. Some of the discussions were very lively, indeed. The creole connection of the Celtic Englishes was a particularly exiting new area of research, forcefully advocated by Salikoko Mufwene.

We had an impressive list of contributers and respondents, complemented by discussants and guests even from as far away as India. As usual, the conference dinner was served in Schlosshotel Cecilienhof, the famous site of the Potsdam Conference in 1945 at the end of WW II. The proceedings will be published in June 2006 by Universitätsverlag Potsdam.
